"Unmistakably Porsche, Unmistakably Cayenne," declared the PowerPoint presentation I received prior to the media drive of the 2026 Porsche Cayenne Electric. In this field, you become accustomed to the pitches, taglines, and marketing claims from automakers, and while not all of them disappoint, very few actually fulfill the promised expectations.

The unveiling of the Cayenne Electric has been a gradual reveal for quite a while, extensively reported by The Drive during its teaser, announcement, and development phases. We even had the chance to drive an early prototype last year, and later traveled to Germany to explore its tech-laden interior and interact with that elegant, curved touchscreen. The one thing we hadn’t experienced yet was driving a completed, production version without any camouflage.

That opportunity finally arrived a couple of weeks ago when I traveled to the outskirts of Barcelona to test the Cayenne Electric and Cayenne Turbo Electric on some of Europe's top driving roads. Here’s how it went.

      Fundamentals

The name says it all. It’s an electric Cayenne, but thankfully, it’s not the only option available. If you prefer a gas version of Porsche’s iconic SUV, you can still buy one. However, if you’re interested in going electric, Porsche is catering to that desire with this groundbreaking model. The Cayenne Electric is available in three trims: base, S, and Turbo, offering power outputs of 435, 657, and 1,139 horsepower, respectively. Torque figures are 615 lb-ft for the base model, 796 for the S, and an impressive 1,106 for the Turbo.

As highlighted by The Drive’s editor-in-chief, Kyle Cheromcha, after testing a prototype last year, the Cayenne Electric is built on the PPE platform utilized for the Macan Electric, albeit modified for its specific needs. It boasts an 800-volt architecture capable of DC charging at up to 400 kW via NACS plug, achieving a 10-80% charge in under 16 minutes. The 113-kWh battery positioned under the floor is consistent across all models, as is the dual-motor powertrain. The rear-axle electric motor is oil-cooled to manage heat dissipation under high strain, which distinguishes Porsche from other high-performance EVs. Both the motors and battery are produced in-house by the manufacturer.

Now, onto more subjective aspects. I must admit, it took me some time to appreciate the Cayenne Electric’s design, though I’m uncertain if I’ll ever truly love it. Then again, have I ever adored any Cayenne? Not really. The free-flowing design avoids sharp angles and overly aggressive edges, and the design team successfully prioritized aerodynamics (with a 0.25 drag coefficient) without making it appear misshapen. It certainly looks better than the Macan Electric. I'm a bit conflicted about the front fascia, particularly in the area where the grille would typically be, but at least the European models conceal that section better with their longer license plates. Similarly, I find the rear of the Turbo model overly complex, preferring the simpler design of the base model. However, I do love the 3D Porsche lettering on the taillight bar.

Porsche brought multiple trims to the event, showcasing different color options and wheel combinations that highlighted the vast customization possibilities. The Mystic Green Metallic and Monteverde Metallic are stunning, albeit giving the EV a slightly Ninja Turtle vibe. If I had to choose, I would opt for a base Cayenne Electric in Chromite Black Metallic, fitted with 22-inch Exclusive Design wheels featuring gold-painted inserts, as depicted in the renderings below. Chef’s kiss.

I also had uncertainties about the interior before my test drive. Another large screen... yawn. But wait, this one’s curved! Still yawn. Then I settled in behind the wheel, connected my iPhone via Apple CarPlay, selected some music, adjusted a few settings, and was ready to go. A minute later, it struck me: I figured everything out on the first try. I managed to perform necessary actions on hardware and software that were entirely new to me without having to search for options, navigate through numerous submenus, or get frustrated when trying to access the radio. It all flowed seamlessly, and the 14.25-inch curved screen’s capability to display different functions at the top and bottom is impressively executed, along with the overall ergonomics. There’s a built-in wrist pad, and physical controls for essential functions like volume, temperature, fan speed, defroster, etc.
