Pirelli allows for four tactical options.
Pirelli tire manufacturers, commenting on Saturday's events, noted today's achievement of 19-year-old Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli, who received the prize for winning the qualifying from Japanese sumo wrestler Kotozakura Masakatsu II, who has won many matches in his career. The effective performance of the tires on the track in Suzuka is aided by good weather: the air temperature on Saturday was around 20 degrees, and the asphalt warmed up to 38. However, on Sunday, the asphalt temperature is expected to be somewhat lower than in the previous days of the weekend, as the forecast promises denser cloud cover.
Dario Marraffuschi, Pirelli Motorsport Director: "During both of today's sessions, the calculations made on the simulator before the Japanese stage of the season were confirmed. In the third practice, teams mainly conducted short series of laps and worked with the two softer tire compounds in preparation for qualifying. The difference between C2 and C3 was around 0.5-0.6 seconds. The results shown in qualifying also met expectations, and speeds increased due to the ongoing improvement of the track surface. As the calculations show, the single pit-stop strategy allows for the fastest completion of tomorrow's race distance, while teams can use tires from all three compounds. Both combinations, namely, starting on Medium and switching to Hard or the first stint on soft tires followed by a switch to the hardest, are very close in total time required for the entire Grand Prix distance. However, we believe that teams will prefer the more conservative first scenario. Starting on C3 will provide more confident grip, and those who choose such tires will gain some advantage on the straight to the first braking point and may gain a few positions. The pit stop will need to be made between laps 13 and 19, i.e., a couple of laps earlier compared to the Medium-Hard option. The scheme that suggests starting on Soft and switching to medium-hard tires is about 10 seconds slower. The pit stop will need to be made between laps 18 and 24, but with soft tires, one will have to work more carefully, which will affect the pace. However, someone may consider an unconventional option, where the first stint on Soft will need to be significantly extended in an attempt to avoid traffic, then switch to Hard, and complete the final stint on a fresh set of soft tires. Although this scheme involves two pit stops, it will allow for an advantage in the final laps. The likelihood that the race may be neutralized by the safety car supports such a tactic, but historically, the safety car has rarely been deployed in Suzuka."
