Ford just achieved a podium finish at the Nurburgring, though not through a traditional race. With a time of 6:15.977 (verified by the official record-keepers at the track), the fourth-generation Ford GT has surpassed the Mercedes AMG One and Chevrolet Corvette ZR1X, becoming the third-fastest car to ever complete a lap there.

The only vehicles to have done it faster are the Porsche 919 Hybrid EVO and VW ID.R, showcasing several points of pride for Ford. The GT’s 6:15 lap time makes it the fastest purely internal combustion engine car on this ranking—and by far the fastest American vehicle. It’s also the quickest car available for purchase; good luck trying to find either of the German models.

Ford Racing driver Frédéric Vervisch set the lap time yesterday but waited until today—April 2nd—to share this news, so there would be no doubts about it being a serious attempt rather than an April Fool’s joke suggesting a revival of the GT.

To clarify, this is not a prank, but if you feel this could be part of a larger strategy, you're not alone. For now, let’s just enjoy the nostalgia from these photos and videos of the Mk IV Ford GT racing around the ‘ring in record time.

Ford’s 6:15 not only secures third place overall but also gives the team a significant win over their rivals at Corvette. The now-discontinued GT recorded its time in the same prototype category as the ZR1X, resulting in a rare direct competition win. The AMG One competed in the road-legal Super Sports category, achieving a 6:29.

This impressive performance comes from a car that Ford no longer sells or actively promotes, and it's no surprise that there are rumors about Ford potentially upsetting the ZR1X with its Mustang GTD. The first victory in that rivalry went to Chevy, and the competition between them seems to be heating up.

In a broader context, VW's 6:05 lap in the ID.R doesn't seem threatened anytime soon, although Ford points out that the weather was particularly cold during the Mk IV GT’s record-setting run on Monday. Meanwhile, Porsche’s 5:19 lap in the 919 Hybrid Evo remains unsurpassed in first place.
