Ford has recently achieved a noteworthy feat at the Nurburgring, but it wasn't in an ordinary race. With a time of 6:15.977 (as validated by the official record-keepers of the track), the fourth-generation Ford GT has surpassed both the Mercedes AMG One and the Chevrolet Corvette ZR1X, now ranking as the third-fastest car to complete a lap there.
The only vehicles that have done it faster are the Porsche 919 Hybrid EVO and the VW ID.R, which underscores several accomplishments that Ford takes pride in. The GT’s 6:15 lap makes it the quickest pure internal combustion car on the list—and clearly the fastest American one. Additionally, it is the fastest car that can actually be purchased, as acquiring either of the German models would be quite a challenge.
Ford Racing factory driver Frédéric Vervisch completed the lap yesterday, but held off on sharing the news until today—April 2nd—to avoid any speculation about it being an April Fool’s joke regarding a potential GT revival.
For clarity, it is not a joke, but if you’re starting to think that this might be a strategic move, you’re not the only one. For now, let’s just enjoy the nostalgic images and lap video of the Mk IV Ford GT racing around the ‘ring in record time.
Ford’s time of 6:15 not only places it third overall, but also secures a significant win over its local rivals at Corvette. The now-discontinued GT recorded its time in the same prototype class as the ZR1X, marking a rare victory in a head-to-head comparison. The AMG One, competing in the road-legal Super Sports class, clocked a 6:29.
This impressive performance comes from a car that Ford is no longer producing or actively racing, and it’s no coincidence that there are rumors suggesting Ford may have upset the ZR1X with its Mustang GTD. The first victory in that rivalry went to Chevy, and the competition seems to be heating up further.
In a broader context, VW’s 6:05 lap with the ID.R doesn’t seem to be at risk of being broken anytime soon, though Ford did mention that the weather was unusually cold during the Mk IV GT’s record-setting session on Monday. Porsche’s blistering 5:19 lap in the 919 Hybrid Evo remains unchallenged at the top.
