Attention off-road enthusiasts: the Jeep Grand Cherokee Trailhawk is set to make its return! Well, almost. The 4xe plug-in hybrid powertrain was discontinued by Jeep, causing this 4×4-focused model to be missing from the lineup. However, Jeep announced on Friday that this absence will officially come to an end later this year.

Jeep's ongoing updates to the Grand Cherokee lineup unfortunately led to the sidelining of the only variant equipped for serious off-roading. It is evident that the Trailhawk will be reintroduced with a different powertrain, though Jeep has not disclosed which one it will be. In fact, they haven't revealed much about the vague teaser image released:

“Today, we are thrilled to confirm that the Jeep Grand Cherokee Trailhawk is on its way later this year,” the company's statement indicated. “Attached is your first look at the Trail Rated model as the brand continues its new product push featuring valued Jeep content, capability, and more, reflecting the brand's designed identity.”

Realistically, there are several possibilities for this. This generation of the Grand Cherokee has been offered with the Pentastar V6, the Hemi V8, the 4xe plug-in hybrid, and more recently, the new "Hurricane" inline-4. With the 4xe discontinued, we are left with the I4 and V6, both of which are currently in production, along with the inactive Hemi V8, which Jeep has already hinted at bringing back.

We don't want to raise anyone’s expectations unduly, but consider this: the 4xe effectively replaced the Hemi in the Grand Cherokee lineup. It was the high-power, high-torque engine that was associated with the most intriguing model. This one.

If you were Jeep and wanted to create the greatest impact without overspending, which model would you choose to launch?

      Yep, we think alike.
