Changes to the rules are anticipated 'for Miami' following discussions - Domenicali

Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali has stated that modifications to the contentious 2026 regulations are imminent and could be introduced as soon as the Miami Grand Prix. During an event with Il Foglio at San Siro, Domenicali confirmed that discussions with drivers and teams are currently yielding positive outcomes.

"We must listen to our drivers, and the discussions are producing results," he shared with Sky Italia. "Changes will definitely be seen in Miami—they will be finalized next week. We are looking forward to a thrilling championship, which we've already noticed from the onset. Our priority is our supporters."

These remarks indicate a quicker response than initially anticipated, with several meetings held in April directly influencing immediate changes.

However, not everyone foresees major overhauls. Former driver Mika Salo conveyed to Ilta Sanomat that only minimal changes are likely. "These cars do not represent what F1 should be. Max (Verstappen) has expressed his dislike for modern cars quite clearly," he noted. "I don’t anticipate that significant modifications will occur, regardless of the circumstances. Some adjustments may be implemented for safety, particularly given the 70-80 kph speed disparities between cars in close proximity."

This safety issue has become a primary concern following recent events related to the new energy management regulations. Aston Martin ambassador Pedro de la Rosa emphasized to AS the importance of prioritizing safety above all else. "You might have differing opinions about this F1. Parts of the fanbase and drivers are dissatisfied, but the most critical aspect is safety, which cannot be overlooked," he stated. "The incidents we witnessed in Suzuka reveal gaps that need to be addressed, and that’s what the FIA, teams, drivers, and FOM are collaborating on. Solutions will come. Whatever changes are made, they will improve safety, which is our goal for Miami."

Adjustments to energy deployment for qualifying are also anticipated.
