Although I’m not heavily into modifying my vehicles, one area I would enthusiastically explore, given the resources, is wheels. I've had a spare set for my daily driver for quite some time, but I always desire more. Additionally, I've never owned a set of Enkei RPF1s, which feels like a missed opportunity that needs to be remedied eventually; they are among the most iconic aftermarket wheels available. This new partnership between the Japanese wheel manufacturer and the McLaren Formula 1 team might just compel me to make the leap.
The wheels are available in two colors—papaya orange for the bold or black for those who prefer a subtler look, each with contrasting labels. They are an ideal choice for the enthusiast who appreciates Formula 1 and British supercars but drives something a bit more conventional. However, the three sizes offered by Enkei wouldn’t even be large enough for a contemporary McLaren. Luckily, staying true to RPF1 tradition, they remain quite reasonably priced:
- 15×8 size | 4×100 bolt pattern | +28 offset: ¥53,020 or $333.48 per wheel
- 17×9 size | 5×100 bolt pattern | +35 offset: ¥65,670 or $413.05 per wheel
- 18×8.5 size | 5×114.3 bolt pattern | +30 offset: ¥73,535 or $462.52 per wheel
The 15-inch model specifically features the newer RPF1 RS design, which boasts a flatter face and less convex spokes. Personally, I prefer this version over the original, even though that opinion might be debated.
For anyone in the U.S. interested in purchasing a set, they can check out Sensei6, which is distributing these wheels from California; there may be other distributors, but none we located by the time of publication. However, it’s important to place your order before April 27, as this collaboration, typical of such partnerships, is only available for a limited time.
The RPF1 has long been synonymous with affordable performance wheels, thanks to Enkei’s manufacturing process that merges casting and forging for enhanced strength at a lightweight, along with a twin six-spoke design for improved rigidity, brake clearance, and cooling. Plus, they simply look great. For years, I dismissed them based on aesthetics, but a change of perspective has led me to believe that RPF1s can indeed look stunning in the right finish and size on the appropriate car. Perhaps yours would suit orange?
