Button: Kimi's successes won't throw George off balance
Jenson Button participated in the traditional meeting of the Goodwood Racing Club last weekend, conducting demonstration laps in his championship-winning Brawn BGP 001 and competing in historic racing events. We reported on this, but in addition, the 2009 world champion and Sky Sports expert was also asked to comment on the curious situation developing during the Formula 1 season, as after the first three rounds, 19-year-old Kimi Antonelli is leading the personal standings, rather than the much more experienced George Russell. "Actually, a couple of days ago I met with George – strangely enough, it was a completely random encounter," Jenson said. "I felt that he was very calm and composed. I think Kimi's successes can't throw George off balance. He knows what speed he is capable of and also knows that things aren't going exactly as he needs them to right now. He's very unlucky, but you have to accept that as a given and it's important to draw the right conclusions. You have to understand that luck sometimes turns its back on you. But it's quite possible that the next race will turn out differently, and you might just get lucky. In general, who knows how events will unfold? But I believe the championship is very interesting – precisely because of the rivalry between the two Mercedes drivers. On one hand, there's the very young Kimi Antonelli, and on the other, George Russell, who has already become a true master, and that must be acknowledged. I am a big fan of his talent. Mercedes is indeed making a strong impression this season, however, the history of this team began with our Brawn GP, which won the 2009 championship! Of course, it was originally Honda Racing, then it became Brawn, after which the factory team Mercedes was created based on it. And I believe I also laid the foundation for its current successes!" Jenson said this concluding phrase with a rather cheerful expression on his face, making it clear that there is a certain degree of humor in his words, although you can't argue with him.
