Piquet believes that Alonso possesses 'greater passion' compared to Hamilton.
"Nélson Piquet Jr. has highlighted a stark difference between his former teammate Fernando Alonso and seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton.
In an interview with Soy Motor in Valencia, the Brazilian ex-F1 driver praised Alonso's lasting motivation, which he believes distinguishes him, even at 44 years old. “His speed is remarkable; he’s an extremely fast individual who remains driven. He possesses the same motivation and hunger as he did 20 years ago. It's truly admirable. You don't observe the same in Lewis, for instance,” Piquet remarked.
He elaborated on the comparison between the two champions, stating, “Lewis lacks the love, passion, and hunger that Fernando still exhibits, and Fernando is older. He’s five or six years senior to my generation and Lewis’s, yet he shows more passion than many other drivers, which is commendable.”
Piquet, who raced with Alonso at Renault in 2008 and 2009, noted that Alonso's performance has hardly changed over the years. “Fernando is similar to Max, as both have a deep love for racing. He’s a true racer and incredibly fast. When I competed against him back in 2008, 18 years ago, he was at his peak and very challenging to defeat; I have great respect for him as a driver.”
He also connected this mentality to Max Verstappen, indicating that genuine passion ultimately distinguishes the top competitors in the sport and could even influence their future choices. “If things in F1 remain unchanged, Verstappen might consider pursuing something else,” Piquet observed."
