"Ultimately, it will come down to his choice and his life."

Fernando Alonso’s future in Formula 1 remains uncertain even for those close to him, as Aston Martin faces a challenging beginning to 2026. The 44-year-old Spaniard and new father has a contract that expires this year, but team ambassador Pedro de la Rosa acknowledges that even insiders can't predict his decision. "I really hope so. It’s what everyone desires," he stated to Diario Sport when questioned about Alonso's continuation. "However, in the end, it will depend on him, his life, and what he wishes to do. We must focus on providing him with the best possible car to make his decision easier."

De la Rosa revealed that previous experiences have taught him not to presume what the two-time world champion will do. "Honestly, I don’t know," he admitted. "With Fernando, I’ve learned to avoid making judgments or rushing into conclusions. I thought Fernando would retire in 2024. Then, after a few races, he informed me he was looking to extend his contract for two more years."

Amid the chaotic start to the 2026 season, Aston Martin is trying to rebound from a problematic partnership with Honda, plagued by reliability concerns. Nonetheless, De la Rosa emphasized the strength of their collaboration. "I must say we’re working very well with Honda," he noted. "Although neither party is satisfied with where we stand, we’re functioning as a solid team."

He acknowledged that resolving the issues will take time, focusing currently on "minimizing vibrations" and "enhancing reliability so the drivers can finish races without complications." Despite the team's difficulties, De la Rosa remarked that Alonso’s attitude remains unchanged. "He appears incredibly motivated. He’s really enthusiastic," he said. "Fernando is passionate about motorsport."

He also downplayed worries regarding declining TV viewership in Spain, even with Madrid joining the calendar later this season. "The viewership for Formula 1 in Spain hinges on their national champions," De la Rosa commented. "Given our tough start to the season, this decline is understandable. Once we provide fans with a reason to tune back in, they will return."
