GM has postponed its plans to launch updated, more affordable versions of its electric full-size trucks and SUVs later this decade as it reassesses the current market conditions. This uncertainty affects the future of the Chevrolet Silverado EV, GMC Sierra EV, Hummer EV, and Cadillac Escalade IQ beyond the current generation.

As reported by Automotive News, GM had intended to refresh its full-size electric lineup in 2028, using this opportunity to introduce lower-cost models to broaden its market reach. However, three sources informed the outlet that those plans have now been delayed.

A GM spokesperson informed Automotive News that the company had “not revealed any potential plans or timelines for any next-generation battery electric trucks” and would refrain from “speculation.”

The sources indicated that production of the existing trucks would continue for now, meaning that unlike the Ford F-150 Lightning, both the Silverado EV and Sierra EV are still in production, albeit with their foundational platform in a precarious state.

In the first quarter of this year, Chevy sold just under 1,400 Silverado EVs, while GMC sold around 1,300 Sierra EVs and over 1,600 Hummer EVs. Cadillac led the sales with approximately 2,000 Escalade IQ units, but it is the Lyriq, Optiq, and Vistiq models that appear to be drawing EV buyers to Cadillac dealerships. Similarly, the mainstream Equinox EV is performing decently for Chevy, selling nearly 10,000 units in Q1.
