Currently, while China is well represented in motorsport teams, it lacks presence in the machinery sector. Lynk & Co. is known for its TCR touring car, but no Chinese manufacturer has entered the globally dominant GT3 category as of now. This may soon change, as Great Wall Motor recently announced at Auto China 2026 in Beijing its plans to develop a GT3 competitor named Great Faith, powered by an in-house 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8, which will also lead to a production model.

Adam Thomson, a former chief engineer at McLaren, is overseeing the project, and Great Faith could be launched as early as next year, according to Sportscar365. This initiative is part of GWM's plan to establish a performance division, which currently focuses on crossovers, SUVs, and off-road vehicles. An exception to this is GWM’s collaboration with BMW through Spotlight Automotive, which is responsible for manufacturing the new electric Mini Cooper not available in North America.

The desire for the Chinese automotive industry to enhance its presence in international motorsports extends beyond Great Wall. As noted by Sportscar, Chery has laid out a five-year plan aiming for a debut at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, while BYD has expressed interest in both Formula 1 and the World Endurance Championship, with rumors about taking over Alpine’s venture in the latter series and developing its own hypercar. This aligns well for BYD, as the maker of the Yangwang U9, which has nearly 3,000 horsepower in its top Xtreme specification.

For skeptics, Great Wall is determined to make its mark! 💪 #GT3

If Great Faith makes it to the circuit, it will face off against competitors like Toyota and its traditionally designed GR GT3, which also features a 4.0-liter V8, alongside well-established names such as the Porsche 911 GT3 R and Ferrari 296 GT3 Evo. To represent China's answer to these vehicles, GWM will need to demonstrate its capabilities on the racetrack.
