The most significant news and reviews in the automotive world, no frills attached.

I’m Byron Hurd, and I proudly defend the V6 engine. My first car was a 1995 Volkswagen Passat equipped with a 2.8-liter VR6 and a five-speed manual transmission. Like many Volkswagens, it was a bit of a mess, but it had an incredible sound. Just to clarify, I know what the "VR" means, so let’s not delve into the technical details of VW's six-cylinder engine. Instead, let's recognize it for being a solid representation of an engine often perceived as a choice for middle-aged drivers wanting to maintain some personality in their four-door sedans. Plus, with some modifications, a decent V6 can produce fantastic sounds.

Not all six-cylinder engines are viewed negatively. Brands like Porsche, BMW, Toyota, and Jeep comes to mind, as each has at least one legendary engine that aligns perfectly with their performance identities. There are various exceptional V6 engines out there. Alfa Romeo has created numerous delightful V6s, and even Ford, in collaboration with Mazda, has produced a fair share. Who could forget the Yamaha-built SHO V6? I previously mentioned VW’s hybrid V-/inline VR6, but I also have a soft spot for GM’s LF4. And of course, we cannot overlook Honda.

Honda sees itself primarily as an engine manufacturer, which explains its production of excellent engines. While its four-cylinder models are the backbone of the company’s sport compact lineup, Honda has focused on its largest engine, the V6, in its flagship vehicles. No model exemplifies this commitment more than the mid-engine NSX. Some critics viewed its V6 as an obstacle to supercar supremacy, while others appreciated it as a realistic choice. Regardless of the perspective, we can all agree on one thing: this engine sounds absolutely incredible with a custom 6-to-1 header setup.

Is This The Best Sounding NSX EVER!?!?

Don’t be deterred by the seven-minute length of the video above. It offers valuable content right from the start, beginning with wide-open throttle sounds. Justin from Bad Cat Engineering then explains how the "Maximum Meows" spiral 6-1 collector setup was developed. The name is a playful twist, reflecting both the company's identity and the sound it produces.

The resulting noise is far from kitten-like; it resembles a blend of a sport bike and a fully unleashed race car. It might not appeal to everyone, but if you're a fan of high-revving, naturally aspirated engines, you’ll want to crank up the volume.
