Good morning and welcome to The Downshift, or TDS for short.

TDS keeps you informed about all the important automotive news of the morning, perfectly paired with a cup of coffee. It really enhances those citrus notes, in my opinion. Each story is summarized in one or two sentences with links for those who want to delve deeper. Happy May, happy Friday, let’s hit the road.

📊 On one side, China's electric vehicle giant BYD is facing challenges, recording its eighth consecutive month of sales decline, with April deliveries down 16% compared to last year, according to Bloomberg. However, when looking beyond its sluggish domestic market, the company is flourishing; exports soared by an impressive 71% last month, attributed to rising oil prices from the Iran conflict prompting more customers to consider EVs.

📉 Deliveries for Hyundai and Kia decreased in April by 1.7% and 2.8%, respectively, although sales for the year so far remain positive, as reported by Auto News.

🫰 The Big Three automakers in Detroit are set to receive over $2.3 billion in tariff refunds from the federal government; Ford anticipates $1.3 billion while General Motors and Stellantis expect around half a billion each, according to Automotive News.

💺 Ford is recalling 180,000 Bronco and Ranger vehicles from the 2024 to 2026 model years due to potentially loose front-seat height adjustment bolts that could come loose during driving, as stated in NHTSA documents.

🏭 Rivian has slightly reduced the expected capacity of its future plant in Georgia from 400,000 vehicles per year to 300,000 due to a $2 billion cut in a federal loan, as reported by Auto News.

🚙 Nissan has canceled plans to manufacture two electric vehicles at its Canton, Mississippi plant, according to a message to suppliers from the company on Thursday. Instead, the facility will focus on producing body-on-frame SUVs, including the upcoming Xterra.

🌍 Stellantis is aiming to reassure the market that its collaboration with Chinese EV manufacturer Leapmotor for distributing products through its European dealer network is not negatively impacting the sales of its own brands like Opel, Peugeot, and Vauxhall, as indicated by Mopar Insiders.

🧱 This year’s Indy 500 will feature a Corvette ZR1X as the pace car, driven by Indiana University football coach Curt Cignetti, as announced by IndyCar.

🪰 Bugatti's customized Sur Mesure team has introduced its newest creation: a polka-dotted W16 Mistral named the “Fly Bug,” believe it or not.
