If you've ever accumulated overdue turnpike tolls, keep in mind: it could be worse. You could be in the position of a truck driver facing over a year in prison and the forfeiture of his truck for evading tolls on the Ohio Turnpike. The Ohio State Highway Patrol's investigation led to a grand theft indictment for the driver, who allegedly skipped out on $21,991 in tolls over a span of two years.

On Friday, May 1, the Ohio Turnpike and Infrastructure Commission announced the charges. This isn't the first time the OTIC has been in the news lately, as it has teamed up with the OSHP to crack down on toll evaders. This issue has become quite serious, with approximately 300 trucking companies racking up nearly $5.2 million in overdue tolls since April 2024.

According to a press release from the OSHP, "OSHP, OTIC, and our partners will continue to collaborate to enhance safety along the 241-mile Ohio Turnpike, which runs through 13 counties in northern Ohio, and to tackle toll evasion and related offenses, including the use of fake license plates and plates that are hidden, covered, or removed."

It's safe to say you wouldn't want to be pulled over by a highway patrol officer with your tags intentionally out of compliance. In Ohio, the maximum penalties for grand theft can include up to 18 months in prison and a $10,000 fine. Naturally, not everyone who can't pay their toll on time will face such harsh consequences, but one can reasonably expect this outcome for repeat offenders.

While I wouldn't describe the Ohio Turnpike as “affordable,” it would take numerous trips to rack up nearly $22,000 in tolls—even for a Class 8 semi. Making the full journey from the Eastgate entrance to the Westgate exit costs $156 without an EZ Pass. Shorter trips obviously incur lower fees, so unless this driver was traversing the entire route each time, he must have been using it frequently.

If there's a takeaway from this situation, it’s quite straightforward: avoid avoiding toll booths, especially if it could lead to jail time.

I understand that no one enjoys spending a lot of money to use the turnpike, but you don't see others attempting this.
