Engine-swap expert Diesel Pump UK is offloading several of its project cars, including a 1952 GMC pickup that has been in development for seven years. The shop aimed to maximize the potential of the favored Mercedes-Benz OM606 diesel engine, known among tuners. Dubbed the “Notorious GMC,” this truck is available for 60,000 British pounds, which is approximately $81,500 at current exchange rates.
The OM606 3.0-liter inline-six is a popular choice for engine swaps, earning the nickname the 2JZ of diesel engines. Similar to that Toyota inline-six, it handles modifications very well. After experimenting with different configurations, Diesel Pump UK owner Luke Dale decided on a setup featuring both a turbocharger and a supercharger, producing 600 horsepower while claiming fuel efficiency of up to 30 mpg. Additionally, the truck is capable of performing wheelies (especially when the bed is weighted down with cargo).
Each forced induction method utilizes its own intercooler, with the supercharger supporting low-RPM needs and the turbocharger engaging at higher RPMs. A passive valve facilitates the transition between them, while Diesel Pump UK’s custom billet injector pump manages the fuel supply.
To harness the diesel engine's power effectively and prevent metal shavings from forming, a modified Gearstar 4L80 four-speed automatic transmission is employed, along with a Currie 9-inch rear axle equipped with a limited-slip differential. The engine itself features an eye-catching blend of billet and chrome, which is critical given its size in relation to the engine bay, leaving little room to hide any poor craftsmanship.
The remainder of the truck is also quite stylish. The exterior boasts retro-style hand-painted graphics while preserving some of the original patina. The interior has been updated in true restomod style, featuring added bolstering on the original bench seat, modern digital gauges on the dashboard, and sound-deadening material on the firewall to minimize noise. Although Dale preferred keeping the suspension stock, he opted for five-lug hubs to accommodate the new rear axle and Wilwood disc brakes.
Overall, this is an impressive build that is likely to cost less than many restomods, even when shipping is included. Additionally, if you require more seating, Diesel Pump UK is also selling a Land Rover Defender powered by a backhoe engine.
