Hamilton seeks assistance with the engine, while Ferrari boasts the 'best car.'
Lewis Hamilton has publicly requested that Ferrari benefit from the upcoming ADUO engine balancing decision in Formula 1, emphasizing that the team's struggles are more related to power than the chassis. After the Miami race, he stated, "We urgently need an engine upgrade because competing against the power of Red Bull and Mercedes is very challenging for us." He highlighted that both teams have a significant advantage, adding that Ferrari has a great car, possibly the best, and needs to address this issue. "If we manage to improve, we could be even more competitive in the fight for victories."
Hamilton's comments come as the FIA is set to decide which manufacturers will receive additional development freedom under the contentious ADUO regulations, a move that Toto Wolff opposes, believing Honda should be the only beneficiary. Hamilton's viewpoint is different, as he advocates for Ferrari's inclusion as well.
Despite the updates introduced in Miami, the seven-time world champion acknowledged that their competitors made larger advancements. "The team has done an impressive job with the updates. It’s a positive step forward, but others have improved more," he noted. "I heard that McLaren had updates that performed even better than they anticipated, whereas we haven't seen that kind of effect." He mentioned that there seems to be a different approach to the front wing design among Mercedes, McLaren, and Red Bull compared to Ferrari's. "It’s about the concept. If you compare their wing to ours, it’s clearly different. I’m not certain if that's the whole explanation, but I'm curious about the effects of this concept."
On the track, the results did not meet his expectations. "I’m not satisfied with sixth place; it’s not the result I’m striving for," Hamilton remarked. He also expressed doubts regarding Ferrari's tools. "Honestly, I feel like the simulator is leading me in the wrong direction," he confessed. "Maybe it’s time to put it aside for now."
Teammate Charles Leclerc demonstrated better pace and was close to reaching the podium until a late spin hindered his performance. However, team principal Frederic Vasseur downplayed the notion that engine performance solely accounts for Ferrari's challenges. "It's about the overall package, not just the engine," he stated. "We need to improve in all areas. But we can contend for the title until the last race. The key is to have the speed to compete for wins." He added, "We have some issues to address, but we know how to proceed."
