A Boeing 767 nearly landed on a bread-filled tractor trailer. Everyone is fine.
A United Airlines flight from Venice collided with a light pole and apparently brushed against the top of a tractor trailer while landing at Newark Liberty International Airport on Sunday afternoon. Remarkably, the truck driver sustained only minor injuries, and no one on the aircraft was harmed.
There has been some uncertainty regarding whether the plane struck the pole and then the truck or if it impacted both. According to a preliminary investigation by New Jersey State Police, reported by WABC-TV New York, “a landing tire and the underside” of United Flight 169 did indeed make contact with the trailer's top. Images obtained by WNBC reveal damage to the aircraft, including a gash on its body and scuff marks on a tire's sidewall. The fallen pole reportedly hit a Jeep that was also driving on the NJ Turnpike.
Fortunately, there is dashcam footage from the truck itself, visible in the ABC News video provided below. While the footage is certainly startling, it does not offer much clarity regarding the events outside the vehicle. The sound of an approaching plane is heard, the driver looks up, and suddenly there’s a loud crash followed by the camera falling to the ground.
The driver was fortunate to pull over safely and received medical assistance for cuts sustained from shattered glass. The aircraft was carrying 221 passengers and 10 crew members, all of whom exited without injury during what was otherwise a safe landing. The plane, a Boeing 767-400, reportedly “sustained only minor damage,” and both the National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration are currently collecting information to determine exactly what transpired.
The truck, operated by Baker’s Express, was transporting baked goods for the H&S Family of Bakeries. H&S owner Chuck Paterakis initially informed ABC News that “the trailer is not damaged, and the bread product was not affected,” although it's hard to believe the truck could have remained unharmed given the apparent force of the collision as shown in the footage.
United Airlines released a statement indicating, “We will conduct a rigorous flight safety investigation into the incident and our crew has been removed from service as part of the process.”
