      APR, a well-established tuner for Volkswagen and Audi located in Alabama, has introduced new software that enhances the performance of Haldex AWD systems. Although APR has previously released numerous engine and transmission tunes, this marks the first dedicated calibration for the AWD system.

      The aptly named APR AWD Upgrade for Haldex is described as “a performance software recalibration with optional supporting hardware aimed at optimizing torque transfer, improving traction, and providing quicker all-wheel-drive engagement for compatible Volkswagen Group vehicles equipped with Haldex systems.” According to the tuner, this enhancement aids in effectively transferring power to the ground “through optimized clutch pressure management during high-load and launch situations.” The calibration primarily targets the Mk7 Golf R, 8V RS3, S3, and TTS models.

      Haldex AWD systems are typically linked with transverse, front-drive platforms, and VW/Audi have extensively adopted this technology (which has also been seen in various vehicles, including Volvos and Bugattis). In VW or Audi models, Haldex operates through two main components: a power takeoff/angle drive positioned at the back of the transmission and an Active On-demand Coupling (AOC) located at the front of the rear differential.

      Simply put, these vehicles generally operate as front-wheel drive during regular driving but can activate the rear axle as needed, based on throttle input, wheel speed, steering angle, and traction conditions. The AOC employs a hydraulic clutch that modulates the torque sent to the rear axle. While it has evolved, the fundamental concept allows the vehicle to employ AWD when required while functioning as FWD otherwise to enhance fuel efficiency.       Even though modern Haldex systems have improved since their inception in the late ’90s, APR asserts that factory systems “can restrict clutch pressure, delay rear torque transfer, and reduce driver control during spirited driving, particularly in modified vehicles.”

      The new APR AWD Upgrade adjusts settings to provide “quicker, more decisive clutch engagement, improved rear torque distribution, and increased responsiveness of the entire driveline.” It also allows for an instant switch between AWD Mode and FWD Burnout Mode. The latter essentially takes the place of the traditional method of pulling a fuse or disconnecting the rear coupling to create a front-wheel-drive effect.

      “AWD Mode boosts clutch pressure and enhances responsiveness to throttle input and wheel slip, promoting faster rear torque transfer and more confident launches. FWD Burnout Mode, activated in Race Mode, temporarily disengages the rear axle for front-wheel-drive operation, perfect for burnouts, drag racing preparation, and dyno use, while preserving OEM-style usability,” explains the tuner.

      Additionally, APR has updated several other engine and transmission tuning products to optimize compatibility with the newly launched Haldex calibration.

      The expected advantages of this modification are “more consistent launch performance, improved traction, and a more engaging driving experience without the intricacies of standalone controllers.” As for the potential wear on your driveline, it’s difficult to estimate. APR is a reputable tuning house, and there’s no indication that this calibration poses any inherent safety risks when used properly. However, it’s important to note that modifications that increase driveline load or traction often lead to accelerated wear.

      I remember driving a Golf R equipped with an APR Stage 3 Plus tune nearly a decade ago, and it was memorable for its impressive performance. Enhancing power delivery would be greatly beneficial for Audis and VWs if the system functions effectively.

      This new tuning option is priced at $449.95 for Stage 1 (which optimizes clutch engagement within the factory hardware’s range) and $549.95 for Stage 2 (which incorporates APR’s upgraded pressure relief valve assembly, enabling the system to safely manage higher clutch pressures during launches and demanding situations). You can upgrade from Stage 1 to Stage 2 later for an additional $99.95 if desired.
