While the Volkswagen Beetle might be the most recognizable bug-inspired vehicle, it's not the only one. Thankfully, most designers refrain from giving creepy crawlies a human touch. However, form and function occasionally intersect, as seen with the Tatra Phoenix semi truck boasting 16-wheel drive and eight axles, resembling a multi-legged centipede.
The absence of a long hood on the cab contributes to this illusion. Since the cab is situated over the engine, it gives off the impression of the truck rearing back, ready to snap at an ant or worm. It’s a bit unsettling!

Tatra acknowledges this insect inspiration. “One of these is multi-axle vehicles [sic], referred to as ‘Centipedes,’ which serve as a sturdy foundation for various specialized superstructures such as cranes, drilling rigs, or aerial work platforms,” the manufacturer shared on Instagram.
One of these vehicles has already been transported to Australia to support a Bronto Skylift aerial platform, which can assist in servicing skyscrapers and tall wind turbines. It's easy to see why a robust base is essential, and 16 wheels will certainly provide that stability.
The trucks are also well-equipped to navigate loose terrain thanks to the eight driven axles. While avoiding excessively muddy conditions is wise to prevent the weight from causing it to sink, a bit of grass or mud won’t pose much of a problem, especially with a 12.9-liter Paccar turbodiesel engine powering it. (The Tatra Phoenix can also come with 6.7-liter and 10.8-liter Paccar engines, but I'm guessing this heavy-duty model only features the largest option.)
Maneuverability could be a concern, but Tatra designed this truck with eight steerable wheels. The rear axles assist in turning, enabling it to complete a turn with a radius smaller than that of a football field.
I might have overcome my nervousness by the time this vehicle is featured in a Snowrunner DLC. Until then, I anticipate remaining stuck in mud and ice. That game sure is challenging!
