The first-generation Audi TT was such a groundbreaking design that it’s surprising to realize it’s now eligible for restomodding. Autoforma, a branch of Dutch coachbuilder Niels van Roij Design (known for creating a Rolls-Royce Corniche shooting brake), has updated an early TT Roadster while honoring its iconic design.
This unique restomod draws inspiration from the 1995 TTS Roadster concept that foreshadowed the production TT convertible (which debuted in 1999). It essentially reverses some of the alterations made for the production model to achieve a more authentic appearance. The front bumper has been flattened and features more horizontal air intakes to highlight the width of the front end. New vents on the front fenders incorporate the side turn signals, necessitating the relocation of the windshield washer reservoir to the trunk to accommodate the compact engine compartment.

This vehicle is a genuine roadster. Autoforma has eliminated the folding roof, opting instead for a sleeker tonneau panel positioned behind the seats, similar to the 1995 concept. Additionally, a small intake has been introduced in the side sills ahead of the rear wheels, while the new rear bumper integrates the tailpipes and diffuser, further simplifying the exterior design, along with the addition of clip-on racing mirrors. Autoforma also removed weld seams behind the trunk lid, as well as the antenna and rear spoiler, but retained exposed screws for the new front-fender and side-sill intakes.
The TT is equipped with a lowered suspension, but it appears Autoforma has not altered the powertrain or other mechanical components. The weight reduction from removing the convertible top and utilizing carbon-fiber-backed materials for many exterior elements should mean the engine has to power less weight.

Nimbus Gray paint and a brown leather interior represent the quintessential configuration for a first-generation TT, but Autoforma has added its own twist. The paint predominantly exhibits a shiny pearl effect, while the lower body, A-pillars, and windshield surround feature a matte finish. Overall, the modifications may only be noticeable to enthusiasts of the original Audi TT. This makes sense, as the car was commissioned by Dutch designer Jos Baijens, who purchased a new model back in 1998.
If you have the budget, Autoforma would likely be pleased to create a custom TT restomod for you. If you're looking forward to a new TT in the future, the closest alternative will probably be an electric sports car derived from the Concept C, priced between the previous TT and the R8. Unveiled last year, the Concept C draws inspiration from the 1936 Auto Union Type C race car and the C6-generation Audi A6, which was introduced in 2004, but still seems to carry some TT elements.

While some restomods prioritize horsepower, this particular one seeks to align the TT Roadster's appearance more closely with the concept car that came before it.
