      APR, an established tuner for Volkswagen and Audi in Alabama, has launched new software that enhances the performance of Haldex AWD systems. While APR has introduced several engine and transmission tunes, this marks the first dedicated calibration for AWD systems from the company.

      The new product, simply called APR AWD Upgrade for Haldex, is described as “a recalibration of performance software with optional supporting hardware aimed at optimizing torque distribution, improving traction, and providing quicker all-wheel-drive engagement for compatible Volkswagen Group vehicles equipped with Haldex systems.” The goal is to maximize power transfer to the ground “through refined clutch pressure control in high-load and launch scenarios,” according to the tuner. This tune is specifically tailored for the Mk7 Golf R, 8V RS3, S3, and TTS.

      Haldex AWD is primarily linked with transverse, front-drive-based platforms, and Volkswagen/Audi have widely implemented this technology (though it has also been utilized in a diverse range of vehicles, from Volvos to Bugattis). In the context of VW or Audi vehicles, Haldex operates using two primary components: a power takeoff/angle drive located at the back of the transmission, and the Active On-demand Coupling (AOC) at the front of the rear differential.

      In essence, these vehicles predominantly function as front-wheel drive during normal driving, but can actively engage the rear axle based on factors such as throttle position, wheel speed, steering angle, and traction conditions. The hydraulic clutch of the AOC adjusts to determine the amount of torque directed to the rear axle. While the system has seen advancements over the years, the fundamental concept remains that it allows for AWD when necessary while preserving FWD operation to enhance fuel efficiency.       Although the current Haldex systems are advancements over those found in the late ’90s, APR claims that factory setups “may restrict clutch pressure, delay rear torque transfer, and diminish driver control during high-performance driving, particularly with modified vehicles.”

      APR's new AWD Upgrade refines settings for “quicker and more aggressive clutch engagement, improved rear torque distribution, and enhanced overall driveline responsiveness.” It also enables quick switching between AWD Mode and a FWD Burnout Mode. The latter effectively replaces the older methods enthusiasts used to achieve front-wheel-drive behavior, such as pulling a fuse or disconnecting the rear coupling.

      “AWD Mode raises clutch pressure and enhances responsiveness to throttle input and wheel slip, leading to faster rear torque transfer and more assured launches. FWD Burnout Mode, activated in Race Mode, temporarily disengages the rear axle for front-wheel-drive operation, making it suitable for burnouts, drag racing preparation, and dyno use, while preserving OEM-style functionality,” explains the tuner.

      APR has also updated additional engine and transmission tuning products to integrate more effectively with this new Haldex calibration.

      The expected advantages of this modification include “more consistent launch performance, improved traction, and a more engaging driving experience without the complications of standalone controllers.” The impact on driveline wear is challenging to determine. APR is a reputable tuning company, and there are no indications that this calibration poses inherent risks when used correctly. However, modifications that increase driveline strain or traction generally tend to accelerate wear in some capacity; this is an unavoidable aspect.

      Nearly a decade ago, I drove a Golf R equipped with an APR Stage 3 Plus tune, and its performance remains memorable. If effective, improving power deployment would be a significant benefit for Audis and Volkswagens.

      The pricing for this new tune is $449.95 for a Stage 1 system (which enhances clutch engagement within the existing hardware's operating range) and $549.95 for Stage 2 (which integrates APR’s upgraded pressure relief valve assembly, enabling the system to command significantly higher clutch pressure during launches and high-load situations). Upgrading from Stage 1 to Stage 2 later will cost an additional $99.95.
