The most talked-about topic this Formula 1 season has undoubtedly been the new regulations for 2026. The backlash from drivers and fans prompted the FIA to implement a series of adjustments to address the concerns. Consequently, the focus shifted to those changes. Adding to the excitement, FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem dropped a significant revelation about the V8 engines during the Miami Grand Prix, which we have all the insightful details about. Isn’t there anything else to discuss?

Certainly, there is. Firstly, two new teams have joined the grid—one is a renowned German automaker that has excelled in various challenging racing formats, and the other is a fresh American team that fought hard to secure its spot. Additionally, there’s an excellent blend of experienced and rookie drivers competing for points in every race. Regardless of opinions on the current state of affairs, it’s clear that the on-track action (overtakes, battles, and unique pit strategies) has significantly increased.

Due to all this, veteran driver Nico Hulkenberg believes the complaints surrounding the regulations today are not unprecedented. In a conversation with the Audi F1 driver before the Miami Grand Prix, I asked him what he would say to fans who only criticize the current issues in F1. He responded:

“To be honest, F1 has always been like this, hasn’t it? F1 is about pioneering technology, and you must evolve with the times,” Hulkenberg stated to The Drive. “If you consider the automotive industry five or ten years ago, it’s different now; it has evolved.

“Looking at our racing this season, the first three races in 2026 have been entertaining. There’s been plenty of on-track action to enjoy. And if you don’t like it, you don’t have to watch,” added Hulkenberg.

I appreciate his perspective because I share similar feelings. Having watched and attended F1 races for over three decades, I wholeheartedly agree with many fans that there are significant issues that need addressing, rules that need adjustment, and procedures that require overhaul. However, I also value what F1 offers today. Whether seen on screen or in person, it's the most comprehensive spectacle we’ve ever witnessed. As we look toward the decade’s end, with the promise of V8s returning as stated by FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem, the future appears even brighter.

“F1 is always evolving,” said Hulkenberg. “Of course, there are purists who cherish the old school vibe and the sounds of naturally aspirated V10s and V12s—including myself!—but the truth is that things have changed.

“A few years back, sustainability was a major topic, but now it’s less of a focus,” he continued. “However, I feel that F1 and its rulemakers were somewhat nudged in that direction to remain relevant. To be a viable business and entertainment model, you must take that path.”

I appreciate Hulkenberg's honesty, and even more, I admire that it stems from his love for the sport and his career. Neither he nor anyone else wants to push fans away by insisting, “If you don’t like it, don’t watch.” It’s more about emphasizing the positives while striving for enhancements in the less favorable aspects.

After 272 race starts, and enduring his share of misfortunes and underperforming teams, the 38-year-old German is finally in a position to start anew with Audi, a team that undoubtedly possesses the resources to dominate the sport in the future.

To conclude, I asked Hulkenberg if he was enjoying his time with the team and car at this point. His response reflected his optimistic outlook, which has clearly played a significant role in maintaining his presence in F1 for 26 years.

“Yeah, I am enjoying myself. It’s about relearning, and you must adapt to new circumstances,” he replied. “We’re still in the early stages, and everything feels quite fresh. There’s a steep learning curve for us and everyone else, but I enjoy collaborating with the engineers and the team to find little advantages. Although I missed the first race due to issues, we’ve secured 11th place twice since then.

“We haven’t fully optimized everything yet, especially regarding the power unit, but starting from scratch, I find it impressive what Audi has accomplished and how competitive we are.

“I’m very optimistic and hopeful, and for me, being part of this journey with this prestigious German brand is fantastic,” added Hulkenberg. “Everything is still up for grabs.”
