Kulthard is thrilled with the Gen4 Formula E car.

On Sunday, before the start of today's Formula E race in Monaco, David Coulthard drove four laps on the street circuit he knows so well in the latest fourth-generation (Gen4) racing electric car. This experience brought vivid emotions to the former Formula 1 driver.

The Gen4 cars feature all-wheel drive, powertrains with 815 hp, and this latest achievement in racing technology accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 1.8 seconds. The top speed reaches 335 km/h.

Of course, the Scot has something to compare it to, as throughout his long career he has piloted various racing machines, and two years ago, right there in Monaco, he tried out the current generation electric car (Gen3 Evo) on the move.

“It’s great that in Formula E I was given the opportunity to get behind the wheel of a Porsche and drive a few laps, just to remember these streets,” David shared in an interview with RacingNews365. “First of all, it’s worth noting the feature of constant all-wheel drive and a powertrain with 600 kW. The acceleration dynamics of this car surpass everything I’ve been used to over the years of my career.

Also, towards the end of the lap, I tried to start from a standstill, and the car accelerated very steadily. 100 km/h in less than two seconds is impressive, and you don’t even have to worry about the rear wheels spinning.

The car has a kind of docile nature, and it doesn’t bounce too much on the curbs. Let’s just say I was trying to be cautious. I anticipate that Formula E drivers are not going to baby their cars, but during the few laps I got to drive, I wasn’t tasked with testing all the capabilities of this technology. You know, one mistake in the chicane, and the car can fly into the barriers.

Overall, I can say that the most familiar sensations I experienced were when I was navigating the chicane or the Rascasse turn, where you feel the front tires starting to slip at the limit of grip, just like in any other car.

But the moment you start accelerating out of the turn, it’s like you’re in a completely different world – the level of grip and acceleration is so impressive.”

The Formula E teams will switch to Gen4 cars next season.
