McLaren is bringing a "Ferrari-style" rear wing to Canada.
The approach to developing the car's aerodynamic bodywork, which Ferrari has traditionally adhered to, has usually been quite conservative. However, this year, the engineers from Maranello surprised everyone by being the first to present a rear wing of an unusual design. When activated in Straight Mode, it rotates 180 degrees around its axis – in the paddock, it was nicknamed the "Macarena wing." Interestingly, the authorship of this joke is attributed to Frederic Vasseur, the head of Scuderia. To understand its essence, one must watch the 30-year-old clip by the American group Bayside Boys, who made a remix of the old Spanish hit by the duo Los Del Rio. It is interesting to consider how much the statistics of views on YouTube – over 440 million – were influenced by the fact that this amusing word suddenly resonated again in the context of Formula 1. Scuderia began testing such a wing during the pre-season tests in Bahrain, and by the Miami Grand Prix, Red Bull Racing had already copied this solution, developing their own version. McLaren also prepared a significant update package for the fourth stage of the season, but they did not have such a wing. However, during the weekend in Florida, rumors circulated in the paddock that Woking was planning to follow this example. As RacingNews365 reports, McLaren spent two months thoroughly analyzing the potential of a rear wing of this design and ultimately decided that it would nicely complement the updated and quite effective aerodynamic bodywork of the MCL40, the second stage of which is timed to coincide with the Canadian round. This is despite the fact that quickly implementing such a solution is quite challenging, as it requires changes to the rear structure of the car: the "Macarena wing" requires a dual-sided drive system instead of the more familiar central actuator. Moreover, to use such a wing during the race weekend, it is necessary to produce two sets of corresponding components for both cars, along with sufficient spare parts for them. However, it is said that McLaren has successfully tackled this task, and all the necessary parts are already on their way to Canada. The other question is whether McLaren will take the risk and attempt to test such a wing on a real track during the single one-hour practice session, immediately followed by qualifying for the sprint. But it seems the team is ready for that.
