For Audi enthusiasts wondering when the advanced lighting systems found in Europe will arrive in America, the answer is coming soon: later this year.

On Thursday, Audi revealed that its next-generation adaptive Matrix LED headlights will debut in the U.S. on the new Q9 three-row crossover SUV. This will be the first instance of this technology being offered in an Audi in the U.S. and it will come factory-enabled. Here's the background.

Some Audi models, such as the Q8 and others, have featured the Matrix LED lighting system in the U.S. market, but the functionality has been disabled until now. The reason for this was that it didn’t meet U.S. headlight regulations, which have been outdated. In 2021, those regulations were revised. However, most manufacturers did not alter their systems since they were already in various stages of production. Rivian stands out as one of the few companies providing Matrix lighting in America, customizing its system to comply with U.S. guidelines.

Now, with the arrival of the Audi Q9 in the U.S. later this year, it will be the vehicle introducing the brand’s next-gen Matrix LED headlight system to this market.

Known as Digital Matrix LED technology, this system will dynamically adjust the light pattern in real-time around objects while keeping high beams on. This feature ensures that more light is directed onto the road without blinding oncoming drivers, minimizing glare for other road users. A front-facing camera will be employed to identify oncoming vehicles and traffic ahead, allowing the system to selectively manage the light around those objects.

The video above showcases a European-spec Q3 with non-U.S.-spec Matrix LED headlights functioning at night. Audi did not confirm that all the features shown in the Euro-spec Q3 video will be available in the U.S., and it’s unlikely that they will be. However, the adaptive lighting feature will be included, which is certainly a significant addition.

We’ll have to wait for more details on the Audi Q9 and its features, but for now, America is finally set to see more modern headlights on our roads later this year.
