For Audi fans wondering when the sophisticated lighting systems available in Europe will finally reach the U.S., the answer is: later this year.

On Thursday, Audi announced that its next-generation adaptive Matrix LED headlights will debut in the U.S. on the upcoming Q9 three-row crossover SUV. This will be the first time this technology is factory-enabled in the U.S. market. Let me clarify.

Certain Audi models, like the Q8 and others, have previously featured the Matrix LED lighting system in the U.S. However, the functionality was disabled for U.S. versions up until now. The reason? It did not comply with U.S. headlight regulations, which I should note were notably outdated. However, those regulations were revised in 2021. Most automakers didn't take action, as their systems were either already developed or in production. Rivian, however, has taken steps to integrate Matrix lighting in America, intentionally designing its system to meet U.S. standards.

Now, with the arrival of the Audi Q9 in the U.S. later this year, it will be the first vehicle to introduce the automaker’s next-generation Matrix LED headlight system to this market.

Referred to as Digital Matrix LED technology, the system will dynamically adjust the light pattern in real time around obstacles while using high beams. This enhancement allows for greater light output on the road without dazzling oncoming traffic and minimizes glare for other road users. A front-facing camera will be employed to detect oncoming vehicles and traffic ahead, enabling the system to selectively adjust the light around these objects.

The video above features a European-spec Q3 demonstrating the non-U.S. Matrix LED headlights at night. Audi did not confirm that all the features shown in this video will be available in the U.S., and it’s unlikely they will be. However, the adaptive lighting aspect will be included, which is certainly a positive development.

We will have to await further details about the Audi Q9 and its features, but for now, the U.S. is finally set to see more advanced headlights hitting the roads later this year.
