Ocon and Komatsu express outrage over Haas exit rumors in Montreal.
Esteban Ocon has vehemently rejected rumors suggesting that he is leaving Haas and even issued a warning to the journalist behind the claims. Speculation regarding the 29-year-old's future grew during the break between the Miami and Montreal races due to ongoing assertions that team principal Ayao Komatsu is dissatisfied with Ocon's performance and behavior within the team. Former driver Ralf Schumacher also hinted that Haas might replace Ocon before the season concludes.
However, during a press event in Montreal on Thursday, Ocon unleashed his frustrations when questioned about the speculation. "This is complete nonsense, to be honest," he stated. "It's unbelievable." He ridiculed one report for mistakenly identifying Komatsu as "Ryo Komatsu." "I was just speaking with Ayao about this," he remarked. "In the article I read, they referred to him as Ryo Komatsu, which is quite amusing."
"They even claimed that Ayao and I had a major conflict in Miami. That is entirely fabricated and pure nonsense." Ocon emphasized that his relationship with Komatsu remains very strong. "I joined this team because I've known Ayao for a long time," he detailed. "We have a wonderful relationship. It’s always been that way."
"What people are saying is not true at all. I am completely focused on my role within the team. I also have a contract with them." Ocon acknowledged, though, that the extent of the rumors has impacted him personally. "I try not to pay too much attention to this, but when it escalates to this level, it feels almost like bullying," Ocon shared. "I’m human too, so it affects me. It affects my family and my sponsors."
"It’s disheartening that in just two or three days, someone's reputation can be damaged so significantly." "These individuals just create stories and face no consequences." Ocon also referred to reports of a supposed confrontation with Komatsu in Miami. "We had a challenging weekend, so we had many discussions afterward about how to improve," he clarified. "But it was merely a normal conversation. I don’t know who is inventing this."
There are indications that the rumors may have originated from a media piece or social media post in Brazil. Clearly upset, Ocon added: "It’s best if I don’t encounter that guy, as he would receive a strong response." Haas principal Komatsu then launched a fierce critique of the media regarding the situation. "If someone wants to publish such nonsense, fine, but what constitutes journalism? I don't understand, it's shocking," said the Japanese executive. "Esteban is starting to feel anxious; his manager is starting to feel anxious," he noted. "But we were smiling and discussing it this morning."
"When I was younger, I aspired to be an investigative journalist," Komatsu mentioned. "And when I read stuff like this, I wonder, 'Aren't you ashamed of yourself for writing this?'" "Any media outlet that disseminates such garbage loses all credibility in my eyes."
