Alonso unsure about 2027 due to challenges with Aston-Honda.
Fernando Alonso acknowledges that he has yet to determine if he will extend his Formula 1 career beyond this season. With his contract at Aston Martin set to expire at the conclusion of 2026, the team is experiencing a challenging year, especially with its new partnership with Honda. Speculation regarding Alonso's future increased recently when Ralf Schumacher implied that both he and Lewis Hamilton should consider retiring.
In an interview with DAZN in Montreal, Alonso remarked that the current circumstances make long-term decision-making quite challenging. "To be honest, I haven’t contemplated it even for a second," he stated. "We’re still dealing with a tough situation at the start of the championship that we need to address. We hope to resolve it in time for the latter half of the season."
"Hopefully, that will help clarify my thoughts and determine if I want to continue for another year. At the moment, making a decision is tough given my current performance." Aston Martin heads to Canada still looking for significant advancements following a problematic first part of 2026, grappling with issues like drivability, gearbox performance, energy management, and particularly vibrations. Alonso revealed that there are no major performance improvements planned for Montreal. "We don’t have any performance upgrades, so we can concentrate on handling," he said.
"There are different strategies to be introduced in the upcoming months, regarding both the engine and aerodynamics." When asked about expectations for the Canadian GP, Alonso predicted performances similar to those seen in the initial races. Team official Mike Krack admitted that managing Aston Martin’s frustrations has become increasingly challenging, especially for the drivers. "You ask them the same questions Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday," Krack told reporters. "It's tough for them to keep repeating themselves and providing the same answers. We have to shield them from that to prevent frustration from building up."
Krack confirmed that only minor, largely unnoticed changes have been implemented for Canada, with more substantial aerodynamic upgrades pushed back to later in the season. "We need to make significant progress," he conceded. "And we understand that in Formula 1, it's hard to make advancements mid-season." "We need to stay motivated by making small improvements at each race."
Meanwhile, lead Honda engineer Shintaro Orihara noted that the Japanese manufacturer is still facing challenges with both performance and reliability. "In Miami, we made significant strides in battery reliability," Orihara explained. "Now, we’re concentrating on enhancing energy management and drivability." "We must improve our combustion engine and reduce friction to boost our performance this year." Krack also commented on Adrian Newey's ongoing leadership amidst recent rumors concerning his health and possible management changes. "I leave those decisions to Adrian and those responsible for the technical development strategy," he stated.
