Ocon and Komatsu express outrage over Haas exit speculation in Montreal.
Esteban Ocon has vehemently denied rumors of his exit from Haas, even threatening the journalist responsible for the claims. Speculation regarding the 29-year-old's future grew during the break between the Miami and Montreal races, driven by repeated assertions that team principal Ayao Komatsu is dissatisfied with Ocon’s performance and behavior within the team. Former driver Ralf Schumacher also hinted that Haas might consider replacing Ocon before the season concludes.
However, during a press conference in Montreal on Thursday, Ocon erupted when questioned about the rumors. "This is complete nonsense, to be honest," he stated. "It's unbelievable." Ocon ridiculed one report for mistakenly identifying Komatsu as "Ryo Komatsu." "I was just speaking with Ayao about this," he noted. "In the article I read, they referred to him as Ryo Komatsu, which is quite amusing."
"They claimed that Ayao and I had a massive conflict in Miami. This is entirely fabricated and completely ridiculous." Ocon emphasized that his relationship with Komatsu remains very strong. "I joined this team because I’ve known Ayao for such a long time," he remarked. "We have an excellent relationship; it has always been that way."
"What's being said is simply not true at all. I am fully committed to my role within the team. I also have a contract with the team." Nonetheless, Ocon acknowledged that the extent of the rumors has personally impacted him. "I try not to give it too much thought, but when it escalates to this level, it feels almost like bullying," Ocon explained. "I’m human as well, so it affects me too. It impacts my family and my sponsors."
"It's disappointing that someone's reputation can be so damaged in just a couple of days," he added. "These individuals fabricate stories and face no consequences." Ocon also addressed claims of a supposed confrontation with Komatsu in Miami. "We had a challenging weekend, so we discussed various aspects afterward to determine how we can improve," he shared. "But it was simply a regular conversation. I have no idea who is spreading these tales."
There are indications that the rumor may have started from a media article or social media post originating in Brazil. Clearly upset, Ocon remarked, "It's best if I don't encounter that person, as they would face serious consequences." Haas principal Komatsu then launched a fierce critique of the media regarding the incident. "If someone wants to publish such garbage, they may do so, but what is journalism? I don’t understand; it’s disgraceful," the Japanese said.
"Esteban is starting to feel concerned, and his manager is becoming worried," he stated. "However, we were smiling and discussing it this morning." "As a child, I aspired to be an investigative journalist," Komatsu continued. "When I read articles like that, I wonder, 'Aren't you ashamed of yourself for writing this?'" "Any media outlet that disseminates such absurdities loses all credibility in my eyes."
