BYD is openly contemplating entering Formula 1, following rumors involving Horner.
Chinese automotive powerhouse BYD has officially stated that it is contemplating a potential entry into Formula 1 in the future. This announcement comes amid increasing rumors connecting the largest electric vehicle manufacturer in the world with former Red Bull Racing team principal Christian Horner, who has been making public appearances following the conclusion of his gardening leave.
As reported by La Gazzetta dello Sport, BYD's vice president Stella Li expressed that the company is currently assessing the possibility of entering Formula 1. "It’s an opportunity we’re seriously considering," Li remarked.
These statements emerged shortly after Horner attended an awards event linked to BYD in Cannes, where he was reportedly seen meeting with Li on two occasions over the weekend.
Speculation has arisen regarding either a completely new Formula 1 team entry—which could potentially be the twelfth and final team—or participation in the sale of a 24 percent stake in Alpine that is currently owned by Otro Capital. There are also rumors about Red Bull’s secondary team, Racing Bulls, in the Montreal paddock.
BYD recently surpassed Tesla as the leading electric vehicle manufacturer globally, positioning itself as one of the few companies with the financial capability to undertake a significant F1 project. Li indicated that Formula 1 could serve as a vital platform for the advancement of the company's technology. "It would be an excellent training ground for testing our technologies," she stated to Sport Mediaset.
FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem has also openly welcomed the idea of a Chinese manufacturer entering Formula 1. "If a Chinese manufacturer were interested, I’m sure the FOM would accept," he noted. "Additionally, why wouldn’t there be more revenue with a new team from China? I definitely think so."
