George Russell: I have never doubted myself.
In Canada, George Russell won the sprint qualifying – this is the second such achievement for the Mercedes driver, with the first being just over two months ago in China. Kimi Antonelli showed the second-best result, finishing just behind his teammate.
George Russell (1st): "Of course, I'm very happy after the difficulties we faced in Miami, but I never doubted myself. I know what I'm capable of. Miami has its own characteristics, but the Canadian track is simply wonderful, and the surface here provides good grip. Here you really feel like you're driving a proper Formula 1 car, and that's how it should be.
Everything went as it should today, the team did an excellent job, and now we are shifting all our focus to preparing for tomorrow. I don't want to say that at the start of the sprint we will just take off ahead, although I hope that's how it will be. However, judging by our previous experience, such things have happened rarely for us this year, or not at all. Meanwhile, McLaren has been doing well at the starts. We'll see how everything unfolds tomorrow, but the start is promising!"
Kimi Antonelli (2nd): "I must admit, I didn't drive a great lap, and the whole session didn't go the best way. I made a mistake in the second part of the sprint qualifying, which cost me some time, but then I decided to do a lap on soft tires without particularly caring about their preparation, and the tires turned out to be insufficiently warmed up.
It was a chaotic qualifying, but I still managed to show the second-best result, finishing just a little behind. Overall, we definitely have potential, and we will perform better tomorrow. We brought technical updates to Canada, and the qualifying results confirm their effectiveness, although, of course, we need to better understand the features of the updated car, as the balance has changed somewhat.
But it seems that the updates are once again allowing us to gain an advantage, and on Saturday we will try to take full advantage of this."
