Carlos Sainz: At times I was driving at McLaren's pace.
Only Carlos Sainz from the Williams drivers reached the finish in Montreal, earning a couple of points for 9th place. Alex Albon retired on the 11th lap after a collision with Oscar Piastri's McLaren.
Carlos Sainz (9th): "Apparently, at some stage of the race, we showed a really good pace, as after the third lap I was one of the last. But we managed to get into the top ten and finish in 9th place, earning points – this is a pretty good result for us.
I made that mistake myself when I decided to start on intermediate tires, as just 8 minutes before the start the track was wet and it was still drizzling. I didn't know that it would stop in five minutes, and then everyone would do not one but three warm-up laps, and during that time the track would dry completely.
Overall, that was my mistake, but it's good that after that I felt anger, which helped me to push harder, drive fast, and earn points for the team again.
I was especially quick in the middle part of the race when I switched to Medium tires – at times I was driving at McLaren's pace, not falling behind the top teams, even though the track was still quite slippery at that time. I really drove that segment quite confidently, which allowed me to achieve a decent result."
Alex Albon (retirement): "Only on race day did I feel more comfortable behind the wheel than in the previous days of the weekend, and I still need to figure out what that was related to. We took a number of quite extreme measures, but it seems they worked, and we learned some useful lessons.
The collision with Oscar happened due to an unfortunate turn of events, and I don't think he intended to overtake, but just didn't take into account the condition of the track surface. This happens sometimes, although I believe we definitely had the opportunity to earn points.
In general, it seems to me that our difficulties are partly related to the fact that we haven't worked much on the track. This year I haven't completed that many laps, as this isn't the first time I've failed to reach the finish. I just need to get into a normal rhythm, better understand the car's characteristics, and then everything will go well. Let's hope that this will happen in Monaco."
