The most significant car news and reviews, no nonsense
Racing encompasses more than just a series of cars competing on a track, striving to outpace each other. It embodies the connection between humans and machines, pushing boundaries to achieve new feats. Racing requires elevated focus, allowing complex tasks like steering, shifting, and using the pedals to occur instinctively. It revolves around individuals giving their utmost with the resources at their disposal over a set number of laps.
This essence, and more, can be found in Bobby Rahal’s latest documentary, True American Racer.

I was fortunate to attend a pre-Indy 500 screening, and I’m thrilled I did, as it’s essential viewing for any racing enthusiast. The film meticulously outlines Rahal’s journey, from his early days in amateur racing at Road America in his father’s vehicle, through Can-Am, Formula Atlantic, Formula 1, and ultimately, Indy.
Produced by FOX Sports, Big Machine Racing Productions, and Chassy Media, the film offers a heartfelt, thought-provoking glimpse into Rahal’s life and his very humanity. It explores his initial struggles in his career, his tremendous achievements, and his friendship with Jim Trueman, the founder of Red Roof Inn, who not only supported Rahal's racing but was also a true mentor and friend (as depicted above). Additionally, it highlights his numerous professional associations with notable figures like Paul Newman and Adrian Newey.

If you’re a huge fan of Rahal, you may already be familiar with much of the content. For those who are fans but only know a bit about his journey, like myself, this documentary will enlighten you and enchant you with a beautiful account of American racing history. Commentary from figures such as friend and team co-owner David Letterman, Al Unser Jr., Bryan Herta, and various other racing personalities with whom Rahal has collaborated over the years can also be seen.
I had the joy of watching this with my son, and as a father of a young racing fan, it was vital for him to learn about some of the lesser-known narratives in open-wheel racing. Stories like Trueman’s fight against cancer during the 1986 Indy 500, and how he clung to life just to witness Rahal's victory, are especially poignant. You may find yourself shedding a tear or two. Spoiler alert: Trueman passed away just 11 days after Rahal’s win at the 500. The documentary also touches on Newey’s short yet significant stint in IndyCar and how the top F1 car designer aided Rahal and (Michael) Andretti in becoming the icons they are today.

The documentary will be available on streaming platforms later this year, but for now, a version can be viewed on FS1 on Friday, May 22, at 7:30 pm ET.
