Stella: We lost due to a combination of circumstances.
McLaren drivers did not score points in the Canadian race, largely due to the wrong tire choice – unlike their rivals, they started on intermediate tires in hopes of rain, but the asphalt dried and the race took place on a dry track. Team principal Andrea Stella explained the reasoning behind this decision after the finish… Andrea Stella: “It should be noted that the tires are fitted five minutes before the start, while the decision is made seven minutes before the start. In our view, the track was slippery at that moment, and we made our decision based on the conditions and the warming-up time. But after that, the rain stopped very quickly, and then two additional warm-up laps were announced, which ultimately played against us. It would have been interesting to see the behavior of the rival cars on slicks if the race had started on time. We were just a bit unlucky that the rain stopped before the start and they gave two warm-up laps – I don’t remember the last time that happened. Now it’s clear that we ultimately lost due to a combination of circumstances, but at the moment when the decision had to be made, the conditions were suitable for using intermediate tires, and then the situation changed. The decision to put on intermediate tires was shared by our specialists, the drivers, and myself. I wanted to be sure that we were using tires that would withstand the first lap. I don’t know exactly how much time the two additional laps before the start took, but during that time the pit lane went from black to gray – the asphalt dried.”
