The latest in car news and reviews, no nonsense.
Racing is not merely about cars competing on a track, each aiming to outdo the other. It embodies the fusion of humans and machines, driving relentlessly to discover new boundaries. Racing demands an elevated level of focus, allowing complex actions such as steering, shifting, and operating the pedals to occur almost instinctively. It's about individuals doing their utmost with the resources available over a defined number of laps.
This essence, along with much more, is captured in Bobby Rahal’s new documentary, True American Racer.

I was fortunate to attend a screening prior to the Indy 500, and I'm thrilled I did because it’s essential viewing for any racing enthusiast. The film thoroughly outlines Rahal’s journey, from his amateur racing beginnings at Road America in his father’s car to competing in Can-Am, Formula Atlantic, Formula 1, and ultimately Indy.
Produced by FOX Sports, Big Machine Racing Productions, and Chassy Media, the film offers a heartfelt, insightful, and moving portrayal of Rahal’s life and humanity. It explores his personal challenges early in his career, his remarkable achievements, and his friendship with Jim Trueman, the founder of Red Roof Inn, who not only supported his racing but was also a genuine mentor and friend (as depicted above). The film also highlights his professional connections with notable figures like Paul Newman and Adrian Newey.
If you’re a devotee of Rahal, much of what you see may already be familiar. However, if you’re a fan only acquainted with the basics of his career, like me, this documentary will enlighten you and provide a delightful lesson in American racing history. It features commentary from friends and team co-owner David Letterman, Al Unser Jr., Bryan Herta, and several other racing personalities with whom Rahal has collaborated throughout his career.
I had the joy of viewing this with my son, and as a father of a young racing enthusiast, it was crucial for him to learn about some lesser-known narratives in open-wheel racing. Stories such as Trueman’s fight with cancer during the 1986 Indy 500, where he clung to life to witness Rahal’s victory, are particularly poignant. It’s bound to bring a tear or two. Spoiler alert: Trueman passed away just 11 days after Rahal’s win. There are also accounts of Newey’s brief yet significant role in IndyCar, and how the top F1 car designer once aided Rahal and (Michael) Andretti in becoming the legends they are today.

The documentary will be available on streaming platforms later this year, but for now, a version can be viewed on FS1 on Friday, May 22, at 7:30 pm ET.
