The most significant automotive news and reviews, no nonsense.
Racing is more than just cars competing against each other on a track, striving to outperform one another. It is about the union of humans and machines, relentlessly challenging themselves to break new barriers. Racing involves achieving a heightened state of focus, allowing complex tasks such as steering, shifting gears, and operating pedals to occur instinctively. It embodies the essence of individuals giving their all with the resources available for a set number of laps.
This and much more is captured in Bobby Rahal’s new documentary, True American Racer.

I had the chance to attend a screening prior to the Indy 500, and I’m thankful I did because it’s essential viewing for any racing enthusiast. The film details Rahal’s career path, transitioning from amateur racing at Road America in his father’s vehicle to Can-Am, Formula Atlantic, Formula 1, and ultimately Indy Car.
Produced by FOX Sports, Big Machine Racing Productions, and Chassy Media, the film offers a heartfelt and insightful glimpse into Rahal’s life and humanity. It explores his personal struggles early in his journey, his tremendous achievements, and his bond with Jim Trueman, founder of Red Roof Inn, who was not only a sponsor but also a true mentor and friend. It also highlights his various professional relationships with notable figures like Paul Newman and Adrian Newey.
If you’re a devoted follower of Rahal, you may already be familiar with most of the content. However, if you’re a fan who only knows the basics of his career, this documentary will enrich your knowledge and provide a captivating lesson in American racing history. It features commentary from friends and team co-owner David Letterman, Al Unser Jr., Bryan Herta, and many others who have collaborated with Rahal over the years.
I had the pleasure of watching this with my son, and as a parent of a young racing enthusiast, it was crucial for him to learn about some of the lesser-known aspects of open-wheel racing. Stories like Trueman’s fight against cancer during the 1986 Indy 500, where he held on for dear life to witness Rahal's victory, are incredibly poignant. Be prepared for some emotional moments; spoiler alert: Trueman passed away just 11 days after Rahal’s win. Other highlights include Newey’s brief yet significant involvement in IndyCar and how he assisted Rahal and (Michael) Andretti in their journeys to becoming legends.

The documentary will debut on streaming platforms later this year, but until then, you can catch a version on FS1 on Friday, May 22, at 7:30 pm ET.
