The latest in automotive news and reviews, no nonsense

Some contemporary RVs are so outlandish that they seem tailor-made for internet fame. It appears that those who can create the most extravagant camping setups earn the greatest bragging rights. I even towed a Coachmen last year that featured a porch larger than that of my own house! However, some classics are just as wild—take this 1968 Chevy truck equipped with a tri-level Del Rey Sky Lounge Camper in its bed as an example.

This impressive vehicle is currently available for auction on Bring a Trailer. This marks its second time on the auction block in the past three years, as we previously discussed it back in 2024. For the most part, everything about the truck and camper combination remains unchanged, except for a few significant upgrades and some new adventures.

The truck itself is a 1968 Chevy C20 boasting a 396-cubic-inch V8 engine and a three-speed automatic transmission. Its gold paint is layered between two coats of creamy white, and there's plenty of chrome to be found. It shines both inside and out, with excellent vinyl upholstery on the seats contributing to the attractive interior. Notably, it also features air conditioning in the cab, making it ideal for long journeys.

But as much as I appreciate trucks, the standout feature is undoubtedly the 1966 Del Rey Sky Lounge Camper. The main level includes a cozy corner nook, a compact bathroom, and a charming, period-appropriate kitchenette with turquoise accents. Additionally, there's an over-cab loft and a sleeping area. Despite its towering appearance, it's quite cozy once you step inside.

Since its last sale on Bring a Trailer, the sellers have added an air conditioning system and a 30-amp electrical setup. While it has been modernized, it retains its vintage charm. Just take a look at the retro branding on the kitchen appliances and that fantastic intercom system.

It's important to highlight that this isn’t just a garage ornament that’s sat idle; the odometer reads around 97,000 miles, and the sellers have driven it roughly 2,500 miles while exploring the American Southwest. They have replaced parts such as the power steering pump, alternator, and drive belt, as well as rebuilt the carburetor.

The next caretaker should continue this tradition. A beauty like this deserves to be driven and enjoyed—not just parked in your driveway, but rather in a national park or your favorite fishing destination. It likely won’t come cheap—the current highest bid is $27,500 at the time of writing, with one day remaining in the auction—but it will surely be much less than the price of any modern equivalent.

Honestly, I'm not even sure there's a modern equivalent to this.
