Mattia Binotto: I believe in youth!
In the F1 Nation podcast, Audi team principal Mattia Binotto spoke about the differences from Ferrari and Sauber, the championship in 2030, and the approach to team building...
Mattia Binotto: "I worked at Ferrari for thirty years, personally knew every employee, most by name. I knew every corner of the company. At Audi, I am still getting accustomed. It is completely different. It is a whole new challenge.
Another country, another language, another culture, a completely different management style. I see this difference and try to use it to our advantage, to take the best from both worlds in the team's work.
Previously, this team was called Sauber and was unique in its own way. Now there is a transformation process underway, and it is not just about building new buildings and expanding infrastructure. It is a process of changing the mindset of people who are used to being frugal. They did their best with a minimal budget and managed quite well, but they did not strive to become winners, and for us, that is the goal. The hardest part is changing the mentality. This is the main task at the moment.
Yes, we are expanding infrastructure, production capacity, and increasing staff. Our benchmark is the best teams. We need more space, more buildings. Right now, we simply do not have parking space for all employees.
We have ambitious plans. By increasing the team size, we are mainly inviting young graduates – this is our investment in the future. Our goal is to compete for the championship in 2030. We have time, we can afford such investments. I am almost sure that these young graduates will become the foundation of our championship team in two to three years.
We do not plan to invite any leading specialists from other teams; we will grow from within. Modern Formula 1 cars are so complex, from the chassis to the power unit, that this should not be handled by one person. It is a team effort, a sum of competencies and skills. I believe in this. I believe in youth!
The title in 2030 is a very ambitious goal, but I believe that the goal should be like that. And I believe that it is possible."
