The Russell descent is caused by the battery's refusal to overheat.
Mercedes explained the reason for the car's stoppage and George Russell's retirement on the 30th lap of the Canadian Grand Prix, when he was leading the race.
James Allison, Technical Director: "The Canadian weekend was important for us - we brought our first major update to the car and hoped it would prove effective. It did, but the weekend, which was otherwise exceptionally good in terms of car performance, was overshadowed by a reliability issue on George's car.
The power unit failure on George's car was caused by a battery malfunction. A failure occurred after a third of the race, ultimately leading to his retirement. After the race, we clearly saw that the battery had suffered serious overheating damage. We need to accurately determine the cause and address it in the coming days."
