Alonso once again surprised with a rare car.
Fernando Alonso consistently becomes the hero of automotive news outlets when he appears on the streets of Monaco in another rare vehicle from his extensive collection. This weekend was no exception: the two-time world champion and Aston Martin driver was spotted behind the wheel of a silver Porsche 918 Spyder. These cars were produced from 2013 to 2015, with only 918 units made during that period. Their price now ranges from 1.8 to 3 million euros, but it's not just about the rarity of this model.
First and foremost, the Porsche 918 Spyder is famous for being the first production car to complete a lap of the legendary Nürburgring's "North Loop" in under 7 minutes. The roadster features a number of quite interesting design characteristics, primarily a hybrid powertrain, which includes a naturally aspirated 608-horsepower V8 engine developed by Porsche with a displacement of 4.6 liters. Additionally, there are two electric motors driving the front and rear axles, providing extra power, so in total, its powertrain delivers nearly 900 hp.
This all-wheel-drive sports car accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 2.6 seconds, reaches 200 km/h in exactly seven seconds, and has a top speed exceeding 350 km/h.
It's somewhat amusing that sharp-eyed observers, who pay attention to such cars and their drivers, noticed a package on the passenger seat of the Porsche that looked most like a diaper pack. It's not surprising, as Fernando became a father just a few months ago. But it turns out that even for completely mundane errands, he drives such cars.
In any case, the Porsche 918 Spyder, with its relatively short wheelbase and a length of about 4.6 meters, is better suited for this than the Pagani Zonda 760 Roadster – Alonso's recent acquisition. It is said that a couple of weeks ago he got stuck trying to turn around in this 10 million euro car on one of Monaco's narrow streets and could only continue moving after being helped by six random passersby.
