The C8 Chevy Corvette offers a variety of engine options: the 6.2-liter LT2 found in the earlier Stingrays, the 6.7-liter LS6 in the newer models, and the high-performance 5.5-liter LT6 that powers the Z06. Electrified versions of the first two are used in the all-wheel-drive E-Ray and Grand Sport X, respectively, while a twin-turbo version of the third (called LT7) powers the ZR1. Additionally, a battery-enhanced variant of that engine drives the 1,250-horsepower ZR1X.
But what if you desire an 8.1-liter big-block?
Your only choice is to build one yourself, and that’s exactly what Larry Hofer from Raylar Engineering has done. Having essentially authored the definitive guide on 8.1-liter performance, it’s fitting that he has installed one into a C8. This has been a passionate project—one we have discussed several times on this site. Now, it’s finally hit the road.

Hofer isn’t out testing the limits of his Corvette or doing high-speed runs just yet. Instead, he’s evaluating it at typical freeway speeds to assess its functionality. This is a significant milestone for the project, especially since no one else has taken on a venture quite like this with the platform.
The 8.1-liter C8 completed a relatively smooth test loop, encountering only a few minor issues that Hofer is addressing. Onboard diagnostics revealed several misfires, although they weren’t severe enough to induce major stumbling during acceleration. A sensor erroneously indicates that the frunk is always open, even when it is closed. Despite these minor setbacks, the car managed to cruise up and down the road, even reaching close to 90 miles per hour at times.
Although these engines are typically found in pickup trucks, Hofer has made substantial modifications to his. It now includes direct injection and variable valve timing, and soon, it will feature a custom intake with individual throttle bodies. The goal is to merge the advantages of large displacement with modern engine technology, resulting in impressive responsiveness and smooth drivability. The engine is barely audible while the car is in motion.

According to the latest update on Greg Quirin’s YouTube channel, the car is nearly 95% finished. Once they resolve the misfires, stabilize the idle, and fix the frunk chime issue, Hofer will have a fantastic hot rod on his hands. What an achievement.
