Zak Brown addressed McLaren fans.
A few weeks ago, McLaren Racing CEO Zak Brown addressed an open letter to the FIA president, demanding strict restrictions on alliances between teams and joint ownership. He believes that each team should be completely independent; otherwise, in his opinion, the integrity and essence of Formula 1 suffers. As an example, Brown cited Daniel Ricciardo, who, while racing for Toro Rosso, set the fastest lap of the race and took a bonus point away from Lando Norris, thereby supporting Max Verstappen's pursuit of the championship title that season. Ahead of the Monaco Grand Prix, Zak published a second open letter addressed to McLaren fans. Zak Brown: "There is one issue you have probably heard about. Not long ago, to survive in our sport, some teams had to rely on alliances and buy technology from each other, and at that time it worked. But now, when the sport is in great shape and teams are financially stable, it is time to move towards true independence. Except for power units, which not all produce, teams should be completely independent – only then can full fairness be ensured. In matters concerning technical, financial, or managerial aspects, alliances can complicate everything. I am sure you, our fans, want to be assured that all 22 drivers are competing against each other on equal terms, that all eleven teams are competing under the same rules. Liberty Media and FIA have done an outstanding job developing our sport; we are thriving, so I am confident – now we will focus on this issue and resolve it."
