Domenicali attributes the diminished role in F1 to Barcelona.

Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali expresses no regrets about Madrid securing its long-term position on the calendar, implying that Barcelona is to blame for its shift to a rotating schedule. In an interview with the Spanish media, Domenicali supported the decision that will allow Madrid to host the Spanish GP for the next decade starting this September, while Barcelona will alternate on the calendar from 2027 onward.

"I’ll be very straightforward," he remarked ahead of Barcelona’s 2026 grand prix in a week. "I don’t believe I have anything to regret. Maybe Barcelona does."

He emphasized the necessity of making decisions during negotiations without unnecessary delays. "We provided Barcelona with the right information at the appropriate time. I’ve always been very open with our friends in Barcelona," he stated.

Domenicali clarified that Madrid was not selected at the expense of Barcelona, arguing that the new race has actually compelled the Circuit de Catalunya to modernize and invest in its future. "This is not against Barcelona," he claimed. "Barcelona has the chance to return and take the right steps for its future. The Spanish market benefits from Madrid's push, ensuring the value of a Grand Prix is recognized and that it remains on the calendar longer."

His remarks came as FIA officials conducted inspections in Madrid this week in preparation for the inaugural race in September. Despite recent reports of disputes involving circuit developers Dromo and Tilke, Domenicali reassured that Formula 1 has no concerns. "Everything is proceeding as planned," he said. "There’s nothing at this moment that makes me think, ‘Oh no, what’s happening here?’ Everything is under control."

He minimized concerns that legal issues could result in delays, stating, "We fully support the decision made by the developer. We believe this will not impact the project’s delivery."
