The 2026 Lexus RX is a key player in the mid-size luxury SUV market, and it’s easy to see why. It offers comfort, tranquility, and ease of driving. In fact, it’s so effortless to drive that you could easily doze off at the wheel. The RX comes in three variants: gasoline, hybrid, and plug-in hybrid. The model I tested is the 500h F Sport, which is the top hybrid variant before moving into the plug-in category.

The F Sport Performance variant adds a significant boost to the RX’s aesthetics and driving experience. Its dual-motor hybrid system working alongside a 2.4-liter turbo-four engine delivers a total of 366 horsepower, compared to 295 for the non-F Sport version. In terms of design, it appears more aggressive, bolder, and features a vibrant red interior. It also presents a paradox in some ways.

While this model is a popular choice for those seeking a luxurious SUV, potential buyers should be aware that even though some RX models might have a sporty appearance—like the F Sport Performance with its impressive horsepower—this SUV isn’t tailored for enthusiasts. The additional power mainly aids in overtaking on highways or offers a smidgen of sportiness in city driving. Drivers seeking better handling, steering feedback, or sporty characteristics might find more satisfaction with the Acura MDX Type S or a European alternative.

      Cons

      - The exterior design is slightly contradictory. The refined and subtle aesthetics clash a bit too much with elements like the body molding, larger black wheels, and orange brake calipers, giving off a somewhat forced vibe.

      - The same goes for the interior. The vibrant red upholstery feels excessive and doesn’t align with the RX's overall character.

      - The F Sport seats have excessive bolstering, which doesn’t match the SUV’s capabilities as a nimble performer. They can be quite uncomfortable, particularly for larger individuals.

      - Despite having adaptive suspension, the tire and wheel combination of the F Sport package does not significantly enhance sporty handling, resulting in a slightly degraded ride quality during typical driving conditions.

      - The technology is confusing, especially with touch-sensitive buttons on the steering wheel, and the infotainment system is overall perplexing.

      Pros

      - Peaceful ride. The cabin is well-sealed, providing a serene and quiet driving experience on the highway.

      - Steering the RX demands minimal effort in any situation, making it perfect for those who want to travel from Point A to Point B without having to focus too much on driving.

      - Sound quality. Coupled with the quiet cabin, the optional $1,160 Mark Levinson premium sound system makes long road trips enjoyable. The audio is robust and clear across various music genres.

      - Luxurious rear seating. Rear passengers benefit from both heated and ventilated seats, their own climate controls, and two USB-C charging ports.

      - Ample cargo space in the back.

      - Strong resale value. Investing in a Toyota is always a safe choice.

      Verdict

If you’re in search of a luxurious yet practical and comfortable SUV, the 2026 Lexus RX deserves consideration on your list. For the best experience, it’s advisable to bypass the F Sport Performance trim in favor of the 350h, which will save you some money while still delivering an excellent RX experience.

For an authentic RX experience, choose the more upscale and comfortable RX350h. The F Sport's aggressive styling elements, orange brake pads, and excessively bright red interior do not enhance this SUV's appeal.
