F3: Yamakoshi achieved his first career victory.
Hiyu Yamakoshi won the Formula 3 sprint race in Monaco on Saturday. Along with him on the podium were Gérard Si and Bruno del Pino.
Saturday morning greeted the Formula 3 participants with variable cloudiness. By the time of the start, the air had warmed up to +23°C, and the asphalt temperature was +30°C. Starting from pole position for the first time in his career was Japanese driver Hiyu Yamakoshi from Van Amersfoort Racing, who shared the front row with Gérard Si from DAMS.
The start went smoothly, and the leaders maintained their positions. However, during the first lap at the hairpin of the sixth corner, a pile-up occurred, resulting in several cars being damaged and retiring from the race, while the safety car was deployed.
The race ended for Taponen, Badoer, Benavides, and Ho. James Wharton and Taito Kato visited the pits to replace damaged wings. On the second lap, red flags were shown as Taponen's car stopped in the tunnel, and it was unsafe to remove it from the track under yellow flags.
The pause lasted for more than half an hour. The restart was given on the fly, with the drivers needing to complete twenty laps out of twenty-three, but at the moment of the start, the countdown timer was activated – effectively, they had to complete 21 minutes and one lap.
Yamakoshi and Si maintained the top two positions, while Bruno del Pino overtook Pedro Clero in the climb to the third corner in the battle for third place.
On the sixth lap, a second pile-up occurred at the hairpin of the sixth corner involving Freddy Slater, who spun Ernesto Riviera, and Théophile Naël crashed into them from behind. The safety car was deployed again. All participants in the incident were able to continue, but Slater received a 10-second penalty.
The race resumed on the eighth lap, and the second restart went without overtakes – everyone maintained their positions. On the twelfth lap, a virtual safety car was deployed due to debris from Slater's car. The marshals quickly cleared it, and the race continued.
Yamakoshi confidently led, but behind him, del Pino was trying to apply pressure on Si and even brushed the barrier, but without consequences for the car. In turn, Bruno was closing in on Pedro Clero, but no active attacking actions were initiated by any of the drivers. In this order, the top four reached the finish line.
Hiyu Yamakoshi not only secured his first victory but also earned his first points in Formula 3. For Gérard Si, who is in his second season, the podium was his first in his career and the first for Chinese drivers in Formula 3. Bruno del Pino once again stepped onto the podium in the sprint, just like in the first round of the season in Melbourne.
