A slide-in camper for pickup beds served John Steinbeck well, but sometimes more space is essential. That’s the case with this custom setup built on a 2001 Ford F-550 Super Duty. Its owner modified and expanded it like many do with their homes. This transformation has made this oversized camper a sensation online.

Resembling a creature gradually consuming the pickup it's attached to, the camper has been a prominent fixture in parking lots for years. However, only fleeting glimpses had been seen until now. Andrew Steele finally managed to locate the rig and its owner for an extensive video on his namesake YouTube channel. In the video, Steele shares that he first spotted the RV in a Costco parking lot a few years back. After posting a brief video that amassed over seven million views, he felt compelled to learn more.

In the video, the RV’s owner, Tom, reveals it initially was a 12-foot Lance camper on the Super Duty, which he purchased from a retired Northwest Airlines pilot in 2003. He kept everything original, using the camper and truck for vacations, but gradually started spending more time in the camper after the loss of his partner and mother. At one point, he decided to winter in Florida but didn't want to do so in the cramped quarters of a 12-foot camper.

Tom, an engineer, knew the Super Duty’s capabilities thoroughly after years of driving it. He embarked on a project that would span six and a half years to convert the camper into a more permanent living space. Initially, he constructed a wooden frame that lifted the roof and extended the front of the camper to align closely with the truck's hood. To enhance aerodynamics, Tom shaped the front to taper similarly to Class C motorhomes that his rig would soon rival in space.

A sizable rear overhang, also crafted from wooden framing, includes storage sections and a porch. The walls are three inches thick and feature diamond-plate steel, with foam insulation inside. Everything is assembled using glue, screws, and neoprene washers. The original Lance interior was stripped and redesigned to align with the newly added extensions, though Tom kept the electrical box, hatches, and kitchen vent fan, among other components.

Inside, there's a full kitchen, a dining/living room with a folding table, a bathroom with a flushing toilet, and a bedroom that includes two large closets and a king-size bed. The interior is all wood-paneled, with storage spaces scattered throughout. A 400-watt solar setup assists in powering the camper.

Tom mentions in the video that the camper weighs approximately 17,000 pounds, likely including the weight of the truck. The F-550 is equipped with the robust 7.3-liter Power Stroke V8, which was rated at 250 horsepower and 505 pound-feet of torque at launch. The truck now has around 265,000 miles, but Tom asserts in the video that it is rust-free and averages 7.4 mpg.

For all the insights, check out the full video, and if you find it appealing, this camper could be yours for $20,000, a reasonable price considering the effort put into it. For comparison, in 2025, someone was asking $69,000 for an F-350 Super Duty RV featuring a 6.0-liter Power Stroke. Just be ready for plenty of attention when you take this unique camper out.
