Following its (unexpected) debut, the Audi Nuvolari supercar prototype has already been seen testing at the Nürburgring. While the company’s surprise reveal resembles the previous R8, we are informed that it is something entirely different—an even more desirable vehicle equipped with a twin-turbocharged V8 that is expected to produce “around” 1,000 horsepower.

How did Audi manage to create such an impressive vehicle seemingly out of nowhere? We don’t need to look far back in the brand's model history for the answer. Similar to the R8, the Nuvolari will be based on a Lamborghini model. Specifically, it will share its foundations with the Temerario. The loud Lamborghini will also provide the Nuvolari’s powertrain (including electric motors), but will deliver more power in the R8.

Audi claims that with the V8 combined with its three axial-flux motors, the Nuvolari should accelerate to 60 mph in just 2.6 seconds, reaching a top speed of 217 mph. The hybrid system also allows for an electric-only mode, although Audi has not yet confirmed a range estimate. For context, the Lamborghini is only able to travel about five miles on a single charge.

The camouflage on this prototype is quite extensive, but the shape underneath is unmistakable. We can also observe the Nuvolari’s deployable rear wing in action, which features three settings: Closed, Low Downforce, and High Downforce. In its most aggressive mode, it generates 882 pounds of downforce, according to Audi.

Based on Audi’s description, we’re likely seeing the “Closed” (below) and “Low Downforce” (above) configurations in these images.

Audi is also diligently working to minimize the Nuvolari’s curb weight. While the hybrid powertrain won’t assist in this area, its advanced carbon body certainly will. The intricate body shell is part of the reason Audi plans to produce only a limited number of these—just 499 units.
