F3: Théophile Naël won the third qualification in a row.
Theophile Nael set the best time in the Formula 3 qualifying in Barcelona. The Campos Racing driver will start from pole for the third time out of three this season in the Sunday race. Alongside him in the front row will be his teammate Ugo Ugochukwu.
The drivers immediately hit the track as soon as the countdown for the 30-minute session began, and after two warm-up laps, they started to attack at full strength. Meanwhile, the stewards noted the unsafe release onto the track of Enzo Deligny and Hiyu Yamakoshi, but quickly reviewed the incidents and did not penalize anyone.
Theophile Nael set a benchmark time of 1:29.384, but several drivers, led by Ugo Ugochukwu, surpassed his fairly quick result with a time of 1:28.707. Louis Sharp went off into the gravel at Turn 9 during his fast lap and returned to the pits.
No one was able to beat Ugochukwu's time on the first attempt, with Taito Kato coming closest, but he was four tenths behind.
For the second attempt, the drivers went out with just under 18 minutes remaining in the session. They again completed two warm-up laps before one fast lap.
Bruno del Pino climbed to the top spot with a time of 1:28.621. However, Theophile Nael immediately improved his result by three tenths (1:28.263). Ugochukwu was close to reclaiming the top spot but fell short by four hundredths compared to his teammate's time.
The third and final attempt took place six minutes before the end of the session. On the decisive fast lap, Uhyun Shin broke his front wing after going off into the gravel.
Ugo Ugochukwu was improving after the first lap but lost time on the second and did not add to his time, remaining in second. However, Theophile Nael also did not improve his time. Meanwhile, Yamakoshi climbed to third place, pushing Brando Badoer down one position.
The starting grid for the sprint is reversed – the drivers who took the top twelve positions will start tomorrow in reverse order. Thus, Gerard Si will start from pole on Saturday. Alongside him from the front row will be James Wharton.
