Formula 2: Kamara starts from the pole in Barcelona.
The feature of the sessions on the track in Barcelona is that all the drivers, including those in F2, are well acquainted with the Catalan circuit, and they do not need much time to get up to speed here. However, in qualifying, the first somewhat representative time was set by Colton Herta, a rookie in the youth series, whose performance has not been the best since the start of the season. But, evidently, the American driver benefited from his debut practice behind the wheel of a Cadillac in Formula 1, and when Colton got into the Dallara of the Hitech team, he immediately drove quite fast. His result, shown shortly after the start of qualifying (1:25.387), held for quite a while, and no one managed to surpass this time. Probably, no one was in a hurry to reveal their cards. However, closer to the middle of the session, Nikola Tsolov, the winner of the recent race in Monaco, completed a lap half a second faster, and shortly after, Rafael Camara improved the result by another 0.4 seconds – 1:24.810! Two-thirds of the qualifying session had already passed, and the drivers returned to the pit lane for fresh soft tires to continue their assault on pole in the last ten minutes. At this point, for example, the championship leader, Gabriel Mini, was still lurking in the shadows, his ninth result lagging behind Camara's time by more than eight tenths, and it was expected that the Italian driver from MP Motorsport would pick up the pace towards the end of the session. The drivers returned to the track with about six minutes remaining in the session. Indeed, Mini, Alex Dunn, Joshua Durksen, and Rafael Villagomez all improved their times, reaching the top five, but no one managed to surpass Camara's time. However, with 3 minutes and 41 seconds left in qualifying, the session was halted by red flags due to Ritomu Miata's crash in the last corner of the track. The Japanese Hitech driver crashed his car, and the marshals began the process of evacuating it and repairing the damaged barriers. Fortunately, Ritomu was unharmed. The drivers and their teams waited on the pit lane for the resumption of the races, while the stewards were investigating several incidents of various kinds, and it was expected that there would be some penalties following this. At 16:30 local time, the green light was given, and the drivers began to return to the track, primarily those hoping to improve their results, including Colton Herta, who by this time had dropped to eighth. However, he remained in that position. Camara did not continue the session at all, nor did the other drivers in the top five, as they hoped that no one would surpass them. And they were right – just like in Monaco, the pole and two bonus points for this achievement went to the Brazilian driver from Invicta Racing, who is currently in 7th place in the championship standings. Also starting from the front row in the Sunday race will be Durksen, from the second row – Dunn and Mini, and from the third row – Villagomez and Tsolov. In any case, Colton Herta's 8th starting position became his best qualifying achievement in Formula 2. And starting from pole in tomorrow's sprint will be Noel Leon, the Mexican driver from Campos Racing, who won the sprint in Monaco as well – he also started that short race from the most favorable position and did not give it up until the finish. On one hand, Barcelona is not Monaco; on the other hand, overtaking on this track is also not the easiest task. However, we will find out how Saturday's events unfold quite soon.
